Biotin: Small Dose, Strong Impact: Which Form Fits Your Needs?

Biotin is an essential water-soluble nutrient widely used in animal feeds to support normal metabolic function. It plays a key role in several critical biological pathways, including gluconeogenesis, fatty acid synthesis, and protein synthesis, all of which contribute to growth, productivity, and overall animal well-being. Ensuring animals receive adequate levels of biotin can therefore support farm performance by helping optimize feed utilization and animal efficiency.

Although biotin is vital to many biological processes, it is required in extremely small quantities. In practical terms, the amount of biotin that could fit on the tip of a fingertip could supply the dietary needs of a sow or a dairy cow for the entire year. Because inclusion rates are so low, achieving consistent and homogeneous dispersion throughout premixes and finished feeds becomes especially important. Without uniform distribution, animals may receive variable biotin levels, which can impact performance and consistency across the herd or flock.

To help address these formulation and handling challenges, dsm-firmenich offers two carefully designed forms of biotin to meet a range of application needs. Each form has been developed with a strong focus on quality, reliability, and practical use in feed manufacturing environments.

ROVIMIX® Biotin HP and ROVIMIX® Biotin are products in spray‑dried form containing 10% or 2% biotin respectively. The spray-dried form has the benefit of more particles per gram with consistent size and composition, and low caking tendency. Rovimix Biotin products have the additional benefit of being cold water dispersible making them ideal for water-soluble applications, and they can be used in organic feed production. Every particle contains the biotin nutrient, ensuring excellent and homogeneous dispersion in feed manufacture, as well as consistent and uniform nutrient delivery through premix and feed.

Alternatively, dsm-firmenich also offers a 10% biotin dilution to include in premix products blended at our dsm-firmenich sites. This dilution offers a cost-effective solution and serves as the standard form used in premixes unless a specific formula requires the spray‑dried form.

The 10% biotin dilution differs from the spray dried version because it consists of pure crystalline biotin diluted on a carrier of calcium carbonate and rice hulls, with mineral oil as a dust suppressant. It is produced in-house exclusively for premix production, with carrier ratios and materials optimized to ensure proper bulk density, homogeneity, and consistent distribution in premixes. Each batch undergoes testing before release to verify guaranteed potency, ensuring reliable and consistent performance from batch to batch.

Both of the dsm-firmenich biotin products are developed with the same commitment to quality and performance to reliably meet declared label claims and deliver the level of nutritional support customers expect for their animals.

Beating the heat: protecting vitamin premix stability this summer

    18 May 2026

With summer fast approaching, heat and humidity pose significant threats to vitamin premix stability in animal feed production. Vitamins such as K3, A, B12, folic acid, and choline are especially vulnerable, as moisture and heat accelerate oxidation and can cause clumping, reducing potency and flowability. To combat this, dsm-firmenich offers spray-dried and beadlet product forms with protective coatings, formulation constraints on reactive ingredients, and recommends storing premixes away from direct sunlight and in ambient conditions.

A strong quality culture reduces deviations by embedding shared values and behaviors that emphasize doing things right the first time. When quality is part of everyday work, employees follow procedures more carefully and take proactive ownership to prevent errors. Open communication and accountability encourage early reporting of issues, allowing problems to be addressed before they escalate. Continuous training and improvement further strengthen processes, shifting organizations from reactive to preventive operations and enhancing overall performance.
