Press release
November 6, 2026
Kaiseraugst (Switzerland), Maastricht (Netherlands), November 6, 2026
dsm-firmenich today announced that Bovaer®, its scientifically proven methane-reducing feed additive, has received approval from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People’s Republic of China (MARA) for use in lactating dairy cows.
Published under MARA Announcement No. 10811, the registration marks an important milestone for Bovaer® in one of the world’s largest dairy-producing countries and comes as China increases its focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture.
China’s Methane Emissions Control Action Plan2, published in 2023, identifies agriculture as a key area for action and calls for the development and application of technologies to control enteric methane emissions from livestock. China has also committed to peak carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060.
Bovaer® is a scientifically proven feed additive, developed through more than 15 years of research and supported by over 150 peer-reviewed scientific publications that demonstrate its safety and effectiveness. Commercially used in markets around the world since 2022, Bovaer® is now fed daily to more than 500,000 cows. Research has shown that Bovaer® reduces enteric methane emissions from dairy cows by around 30% on average, with actual reductions depending on factors including diet, dose and feeding conditions.
“We are excited to see Bovaer® receive registration in China. This important milestone adds another proven tool to support China’s growing commitment to lower-carbon dairy production and to addressing methane emissions from agriculture,” said Sanjay Jain, Global Vice President Bovaer® at dsm-firmenich. “China has a large and increasingly sophisticated dairy industry, with a growing focus on productivity and lower-carbon production. We look forward to working with dairy farmers, customers and partners across the value chain to help turn this ambition into measurable methane reductions on farm.”
