With Bovaer®, farmers now have a simple solution to help them do even more to protect our planet

Climate change brings new challenges – but also new opportunities to keep leading the way.

Farmers have always been custodians of the land - caring for animals, protecting nature and providing nutritious food for us all. For generations farmers have adapted to find better ways to farm and look after the land.

Bovaer® is a simple change, but one that can have a big impact for generations to come

The milk you produce every day can help make a real difference for the climate. That’s the future Bovaer® is helping to build - a simple, science-based innovation that supports the work you’re already doing for the environment, animal welfare and farm performance.

No change to normal on-farm routine

Just like any other feed supplement, it is incorporated very simply into the farm minerals or feed before it arrives on farm.

Yet including Bovaer® significantly decreases the methane cows usually produce as they digest feed. It works by reducing the activity of the enzyme responsible for methane emission in the cow’s rumen and takes effect within 30 minutes, without affecting milk yield, quality or cow health.

It’s a simple addition to a cow’s diet that makes a big difference to the climate

30% to 45% methane reduction

Bovaer® has no effect on milk yield, quality or cow health and reduces methane emissions on average by 30% for dairy cattle, and 45% for beef cattle.

Used at large scale on farms

Used on farm since 2022 and fed daily to more than 500.000 cows. Bover® is widely trusted by farmers across the world.

Safe and simple

Used on farm like any other feed supplement.

Additional income

Funded through various sustainability frameworks, ensuring farmers are rewarded for its use.

Why it matters…

Methane is one of the biggest contributors to climate change – and dairy farming can be part of the solution. By using Bovaer®, you can help reduce emissions from your herd, making every litre of milk or kilo of beef better for the climate and building long-term resilience.

Cutting methane is often called the “emergency brake” of climate change. Methane doesn’t stay in the atmosphere for long – around a decade – but while it’s there, it’s extremely powerful at trapping heat. So reducing it has an immediate and measurable cooling effect, while it takes much longer for the benefits of carbon dioxide reduction to be felt.

That means tackling methane now can help avoid dangerous climate tipping points, buying valuable time for longer-term climate action – and strengthening resilience on farm.

And with Bovaer®, that change can happen at scale. For every million cows fed with Bovaer®, we reduce climate emissions by more than one million tons of CO2e each and every year – a simple but powerful way to help safeguard the future of dairy and beef.

How much impact can you have on your farm?

The methane reduction effect of Bovaer® is dependent on the ration fed to your dairy and beef cattle and the dosage of Bovaer® applied.

The solution for methane reduction: Bovaer® reduces methane emissions in dairy cows by 30% and in beef cattle by 45%, on average

Frequently Asked Questions

Bovaer® offers a practical and proven way to reduce enteric methane emissions—by approximately 30% in dairy cows and 45% in beef cattle—without altering your farming system. This helps meet climate goals set by processors or retailers. In many regions, financial incentives such as premiums, carbon credits, or subsidies are available to reward this sustainability effort.

Yes, Bovaer® has been in large-scale commercial use since 2022. It is commercially available in over 70 countries and is currently part of the daily diet of over 500,000 cows and beef cattle worldwide.

Yes, Bovaer® is completely safe for cows. Backed by over 15 years of research, it specifically targets a single enzyme in microbes in the rumen responsible for methane production. It does not disrupt digestion, harm beneficial microbes, or affect the cow’s overall health or welfare. The product breaks down rapidly into 2 natural compounds  already present in the feed, and methane production returns to normal within one day if Bovaer® supplementation stops.

No, it does not. Controlled trials and large-scale commercial rollouts have shown that milk production, composition, and processability are unchanged. In some cases, effects on performance has been neutral to slightly positive, depending on the ration and management practices at the farm.

No, there is no impact on cows’ fertility. Regulatory assessments by food safety authorities in the EU and UK have confirmed that Bovaer® poses no concerns for cows’ fertility. Scientific studies and feedback from farmers using Bovaer® at scale have consistently reported no fertility issues.

Bovaer® integrates seamlessly into your daily routine. Most farms receive it pre-mixed into a mineral or concentrate feed by their supplier. No new equipment or extra chores are required—simply feed your herd as usual. The dose is typically calculated based on the cow’s dry matter intake.

Bovaer® is easy and safe for farmers to work with. The same safety standards apply on the farm like any other feed, regardless of whether it contains Bovaer® or not.

In most markets, using Bovaer® is voluntary. We believe that taking climate action should not place a financial burden on farmers. Therefore, we consistently collaborate with cooperatives, retailers, or governments to provide incentives for implementing methane-reducing practices. Regulations vary by country.

You can easily measure the methane reductions achieved with Bovaer®. There are simple, well-established calculation tools and methods available to document these results for your farm records. To make sure you get recognized for your efforts, talk to your local nutritionist or veterinary advisor about programs or certification schemes in your area that reward methane reduction.

Absolutely. Bovaer® works exclusively inside the cow’s rumen and does not affect manure composition or biogas yield. This makes it fully compatible with biodigesters and other manure-based energy systems.

Yes, you can. Research shows that for 6h of partial grazing combined with Bovaer® supplementation achieves methane reductions of around 29–34%, comparable to full 24 h indoor TMR feeding with Bovaer®. While grazing alone can slightly reduce methane due to lower dry matter intake, combining partial grazing with Bovaer® maximizes the effect and improves methane intensity per kilogram of milk.

It’s a complement, not a replacement. While regenerative grazing helps put carbon back into the soil, Bovaer® stops methane from entering the air in the first place. When used together, they create a powerful "one-two punch" for climate-smart agriculture.

Yes, Bovaer® is simple to use and significantly reduces farm emissions. Bovaer® is added directly to existing cow feed, either in mineral feed or protein meal from the feed supplier. It requires no investments or permits, zero new buildings, zero new machinery, and zero changes to the cow's daily routine. You can start using it right away.*
